Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill ordered to face court over crash that killed a motorcyclist

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill has been served a notice to appear in court over her car collision that killed a motorcyclist in January.

Late on Friday, police confirmed the notice had been issued following investigations into the fatal crash at Aitkenvale in Townsville on January 30.

She has been ordered to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on October 30 for driving without due care and attention causing death.

Councillor Hill’s Commodore collided with the motorbike at the intersection of Nathan and Alfred streets around 7:45am.

Cr Hill, 60, was the only person in the car at the time and was not injured in the crash.

Police said witnesses, including an off-duty doctor, rendered first aid to the 33-year-old male rider before he was transported to Townsville Hospital, where he was declared dead.

A spokesperson for Cr Hill issued a statement on Friday evening.

“This is an extremely difficult time for all involved and affected by the accident,” the spokesperson said.

“As it is a matter before the court, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

On the day of the accident, police said early investigations suggested Cr Hill’s car was turning right into Alfred Street when the motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the car.

It is understood the motorcycle had been travelling south along Nathan Street.

Shortly after the accident, a Townsville City Council spokesperson said Cr Hill was treated for shock.

“Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragedy,” the spokesperson said.

The forensic crash unit is continuing investigations into the accident and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
