Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott, whose region takes in Rossville, said the deaths were a horrible shock.

“This is going to hurt,” Cr Scott said.

“The fact that this is such a young child … this will be felt very deeply by a small, close community like Rossville.”

Specialist police and detectives from Cairns and Mareeba travelled to Rossville late yesterday to commence investigations.

It is understood police are not searching for a suspect.

Detective Inspector Jason Smith said they were working to establish how the pair died.

Police are seeking information from anyone who knew the pair.
