Buying or selling a car in Queensland isn’t as simple as it seems.

There’s some paperwork involved. One of the most important pieces is a roadworthy certificate.

Most people have heard of it — but not many know what actually happens during the inspection.

If you've ever wondered what the mechanic is actually looking at, this is for you.

What Is a Roadworthy Certificate?

In Queensland, a roadworthy certificate is officially called a safety certificate.

It's not a full service or a mechanical inspection. It simply checks if the car meets the state's minimum safety standards on the day it was inspected.

If you're selling a registered vehicle, you're required by law to hand one over to the buyer before the sale goes through. It protects the buyer, and it protects you as well!

Also, it doesn’t matter if you are getting a roadworthy certificate on the Gold Coast or any other city — the inspection covers the same things statewide.

So What Does the Mechanic Actually Check?

Here's what a licensed examiner works through during the inspection.

Tyres and wheels

Tread depth, tyre condition, and whether everything is fitted correctly. Bald or cracked tyres are one of the most common reasons cars get knocked back.

Brakes

During a brake check, the mechanic looks at pad thickness, disc condition, and how the brakes actually perform. A car that pulls to one side when braking won't pass.

Steering and suspension

Worn ball joints, loose steering, or knackered suspension components are all red flags. These things directly affect how the car handles, so they're taken seriously.

Lights

Every exterior light gets checked — headlights, brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, and even the number plate light. One blown globe is enough to fail the inspection.

Windscreen and wipers

A chip or crack sitting in the driver's line of sight is a fail. So is a windscreen that's heavily damaged. Wipers are checked too — they need to actually do their job.

Seatbelts

All of them, not just the front ones. The mechanic checks that each belt clicks in, retracts properly, and isn't frayed or damaged.

Body and chassis

This is where rust, structural damage, and dodgy modifications come into play. The floor, firewall, and body mounts all get a look. Anything that compromises the structural strength of the car is a problem.

Fluid leaks

A significant brake fluid or fuel leak will fail the inspection. Minor oil seepage might get noted, but won't always result in a fail — it depends on the severity.

Horn

It gets tested. Sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people forget about it.

How Long Will It Take?

Usually between 45 minutes and an hour.

If the car passes, you walk out with the certificate. If it doesn't, you'll get a written list of what needs fixing before a re-inspection.

Find a Reliable Mechanic Near You

When you're searching for a car safety inspection in your area, go with a licensed examiner. Not every workshop is authorised to issue safety certificates.

A good local mechanic who does a safety inspection will also be upfront about what needs fixing if the car doesn't pass.

If you're on the Gold Coast, a mechanic in Southport who handles safety certificates regularly will know exactly what examiners look for and can often sort out any issues on the spot.

The team at Mark Jackson Automotive are Gold Coast's go-to mechanics for honest, thorough roadworthy inspections you can count on.

Whether you're buying or selling a vehicle, they'll make sure you're covered every step of the way.
